This Child Protection training will clearly outline how child protection must be put at the core of any organisation or individual working with children and young people.  The course is available to groups or individuals who are working, or would like to work, with children and young people in Ireland.
 

There is no certainty that children in Ireland are safe 24 hours a day. No childhood should be shattered by abuse but it is still a concern very prevalent in our society. Acknowledging that it is not possible to guarantee that no child will be harmed by neglect or aggression or exploited by others, it is our duty to do everything in our ability to protect them from such harm.  This process can begin by trying to ensure a child is safe in all aspects of their lives. This includes where they live, where they visit, where they learn and where they play.

This Child Protection training will provide participants with a broad understanding of child protection issues, from understanding the nature of abuse to appropriate recording and reporting procedures and policies. It will reference National Children First Guidelines as well as exploring the broader picture of child protection in Ireland.

On completion of the programme, participants should be able to:

  • Appraise the relevant legislation, Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children (2011) and the Children First Act (2015), in the context of promoting and protecting the welfare of children
  • Critically analyse the influence of attitudes and values in responding to child protection issues
  • Differentiate the categories of abuse and recognise the signs and symptoms of each category
  • Clarify policies and procedures to be followed if there is a concern/disclosure of abuse
  • Respond to a concern/disclosure of child abuse in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Recognise the value and importance of working with children, parents, carers, community and organisations
  • Discuss the procedure to be followed when responding to allegations of abuse against a staff member
  • Identify the support mechanisms available within any organisation working with children.
  • Be confident with regard to making a referral
