This Week’s Therapy Topic of Interest - TCI

This week we’ve decided to look beyond the available training course list and focus on Therapeutic Crisis Intervention as a topic of interest. TCI is a behaviour managing therapy support mechanism educating the practice of healthy coping skills for young people and children in distress through situational counselling. The Therapeutic Crisis Intervention method was developed since the late 1970s by Family Life Development Center in Cornell University with a case study in New York State of the nature of child neglect and abuse in a state care setting. Institutional care settings hosted a range of neglect incidences & abuse stemming from bad management, unrestrained disciplinary measures, and negative personal development features such as isolation & prolonged restraint periods. Today, social care agents use cognitive therapy to overthrow ingrained thinking from negative lived experiences, a bit like occupational therapy to a degree. Following on the assessment report of the New York case study, and counsel from associated child centred groups, the result was the development of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention. The effect of this initiative was the reduction of child neglect & abuse where TCI programmes were introduced due to its therapy induced nature.
